WS 2 is a transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC), which have a natural bandgap making them more suited to photon-electron interaction – more so than graphene which has no bandgap. TMDC bandgaps are indirect in the bulk material, and direct in monolayers. WS 2 has three sub-layers in its monomolecular layer: a sheet of tungsten sandwiched between two sheets of sulphur atoms.
