2019-3-28 · Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is structurally very similar to graphite, with successively stacked (and van der Waals bonded) sheets of hexagonally arranged sp 2-bonded boron and nitrogen . However, unlike graphite, h-BN is purely synthetic, with a wide electronic band gap (hence the nickname 'white graphite') [15–17].

A highly regular mesh of hexagonal boron nitride with a 3-nanometer periodicity and a 2-nanometer hole size was formed by self-assembly on a Rh(111) single crystalline surface. Two layers of mesh cover the surface uniformly after high-temperature exposure of the clean rhodium surface to borazine (HBNH)3. The two layers are offset in such a way as to expose a minimum metal surface area.

Lattice parameters for hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) were determined using X-ray powder diffraction at a synchrotron-radiation source (beamline B2, Hasylab/DESY, Hamburg) in the previously uninvestigated temperature range from 10 K up to 297.5 K. The relative change of a and c with rise of temperature in the studied range is anisotropic and amounts to about -0.05% and +0.82%, respectively.
